Food label compliance breaks down in the same four places for most small food producers going to print for the first time.
The first is the allergen statement format. Many small brands either list allergens inconsistently or omit one of the nine because they assumed it was visible enough in the ingredient list. An allergen listed as part of a compound ingredient name is not the same as proper allergen disclosure. The “Contains” statement or parenthetical format is required.
The second is net weight placement. The statement lands outside the lower 30 percent of the label, or in a font size that falls below the minimum for the panel area. This is a fixable problem at the design stage and a common one when the designer working on your label is not familiar with food labeling regulations.
The third is ingredient list formatting. Brands omit water, list compound ingredients without sub-ingredient disclosure, or arrange the list in the wrong order. All three are food label compliance failures, even when the ingredients themselves are present somewhere on the package.
The fourth is missing or incomplete responsible party information. Many first-time founders assume a phone number or website is sufficient. It is not. A business name and mailing address formatted to FDA standards is what the label requires.
